What is Chi Sau?
Chi Sau is Wing Chun’s laboratory.
What is a laboratory?
A laboratory is a place to run Procedures, to test Theories, to obtain Results that can be accurately measured.
Laboratories do not teach any one anything, that is not their purpose or design.
As Wing Chun’s laboratory, Chi Sau does not teach any one anything, it is not Chi Sau’s purpose or design.
We can, and hopefully do, learn from the results gained in Chi Sau, but to benefit from any result, to learn, to gain value we need to understand what the result is saying.
And to understand that we need to know what test we were running.
Many say that Chi Sau is a sensitivity exercise.
This would explain why so many students feelings are hurt when you criticise their efforts. They have become over sensitive to criticism, perhaps too much Chi Sau.
As Wing Chun’s laboratory Chi Sau can be used as a Vehicle to test and observe the Full Spectrum of Wing Chun, and not just Sensitivity.
What can Chi Sau test?
It can test Structural Correctness.
It can test Application of Method.
It can test Stability.
It can test Mobility
It can test Manipulation of Partners C. of G.
It can test Control of ones own C. of G.
It can test Attack ideas.
It can test Defence ideas.
It can test Cause and Effect.
It can test anything that you do in you day to day training.
But you can only get results from one test at a time, if you try to run 2 or 3 or maybe more test simultaneously how do you separate the diverse results?
How do you understand?
How do you learn?
In my experience most Students only play Chi Sau or use it to enhance there Ego by trying to dominate their partner.
Without a Crystal Clear idea of what you are looking for there is no possibility of getting an accurate result.
To repeat what I stated earlier, as Wing Chun’s laboratory Chi Sau does not teach any one anything, it is not Chi Sau’s purpose or design.
If you truly believe that Chi Sau teaches you something you are looking at the Finger instead of the Moon.
